When your car gets stuck in snow, it’s crucial to follow specific safety measures to ensure your well-being and that of others around you. Begin by checking that the tailpipe is clear of snow, as a blocked exhaust can lead to the dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide inside the vehicle. Make sure to clear at least three feet of snow away from the tailpipe to prevent this hazard.

To maintain warmth, turn your engine on for 10 minutes every hour. This helps conserve fuel while keeping the interior of your car warm enough to prevent hypothermia. Additionally, turning on your hazard lights is essential to alert other drivers of your stationary vehicle, reducing the risk of accidents.

If your tires are struggling to gain traction, use a shovel, your hands, or any available materials like cardboard or floor mats to clear snow from around the tires. Shift between drive (low gear) and reverse in short intervals, gently accelerating each time to avoid spinning the wheels excessively. This technique can help your tires regain traction without causing further entrenchment.

In some cases, letting a small amount of air out of your tires can increase the tread surface area, offering better grip on the snow. However, this should be done cautiously to avoid damaging the tires. Finally, it’s important to contact your lead or storm manager immediately to inform them of your situation and receive further instructions or assistance.
